Prototype

This is an accurate model of a standard British Railways long-wheelbase open wagon design for carrying steel pipes. Built in 1949-54 to an LMS design as diagram 1/460, these wagons were built mainly to carry traffic from the large Stanton and Staveley Works near Ilkeston. Originally unfitted, vacuum brakes were fitted as a priority after 1955. These wagons later carried other traffic, following the decline of the pipe traffic in the 1970s. Most were withdrawn in the 1980s, although some survived in engineering department use.
