Notes
The "OIL" markings were common in the early years of the use of oil axleboxes, and identified that the wagon was fitted with oil axleboxes rather than the then traditiional grease ones. One marking was located on the solebar over (or at least near) each axlebox, often being tucked under the curved washer plate for the W-irons. Because of this restricted location, the decals are designed to be smaller in height the usual solebar decals. Also, if you select a set of these decals you will receive 4 decals rather than the usual 2.
The date markings were sometimes used on the wagon solebar of private owner wagons, often near or over one axlebox on each side. They are assumed to record the date of some sort of maintenance operation, and usually included letter(s) in place of numbers in either the first or third position, with the month and year of the date occupying thd other two.
The arrow markings were located adjacent to (above or to one side of) a control lever or wheel for operating the wagon's hopper, or brakes where the wagon is fitted with a control wheel rather than the usual lever.
- The "Closed" quadrant arrows are from the LNER d100 steel hopper wagons. Two levers per side, in opposite directions.
- The "Open/Shut" horizontal arrows are from GWR grain hopper wagons. One wheel each side.
- The "On/Off" horizontal arrows are from various wagons with wheel-operated brakes.
Additional, non-standard variations are also provided, that may be of use for other wagons.
