Wide Blinds Artwork (7mm scale, dark orange)
Narrow Blinds Artwork (7mm scale, dark orange)
Available colours (plus white, not shown).
These decals are for creating blinds for railway carriages. A variety of different colours are available. They are primarily for use with my 3D printed blind components, which are available here and illustrated on the right. That page also gives details for how to fit the blinds to your model. Alternatively, you can make a suitable blind supports for yourself from plastic sheet and strip.
The decals are configurable for window size in two basic versions: wide or narrow. The wide type is for the large outside windows typically found on corridor compoartment or open coaches. The narrow type is for the smaller windows either side of a compartment door. Both versions have a 3 to 6 inch overlap or border at each side and along the top edge. Note that, as with other dimensions on this page, the overlap sizes are in scale inches, not model mm, so the actual overlap varies with scale.
Elsewhere on this page dimensions given in feet and/or inches likewise refer to the prototype size, and those in mm refer to the model size. A calculator to help convert between prototype inches and model mm is available here (opens in new window/tab).
Cutting guide marks are provided to allow these decals to be adjusted for different degrees to which the blinds are drawn down (in 1/8th window height intervals), and degrees of overlap beyond the window edges. The long guide marks denote the designed window aperture edges and degrees of drawing; the smaller marks are provided at scale 3 in intervals from these marks. Samples of the decal artwork are shown to the right.
These decals can be supplied in a variety of scales, from 2mm to 1:22.5, and come on white-backed waterslide decal paper. If the decals are used with a transparent support, the thinness of the decals will allow some light through, providing a slightly translucent appearance which may be useful if your carriage is fitted with internal lighting.
The decals are supplied on A5 sheets (£7.50 per sheet), or smaller, so the number of blinds on a sheet varies with scale:
Scale | 1:22.5 | 10 mm | 1:32 | 7 mm | 4 mm | 3 mm | 1:120 | 2 mm |
Wide | 4 | 9 | 9 | 9 | 18 | 21 | 24 | 28 |
Narrow | 8 | 15 | 18 | 18 | 36 | 42 | 48 | 56 |
These quantities are based on a window size of 40 (h) x 48 (w) in., the size of the large windows of a BR Mk1 coach. The narrow types are 1/2 this width.
