Notes

Many private owner wagons, especially those owned by the larger leasing and building companies, were fitted with plates giving details who should be contacted should the wagon be in need of repair.

Private owner wagons were required to be inspected every few years, and have any faults found put right. On successful completion a new "Generally Repaired" plate was fixed to the solebar on both sides. This gave details of the date of the inspection/repair, and the company responsible for carrying it out. The interval between such inspections is not known; the railway companies generally used a 7 year cycle between major overhauls and repainting for their own wagons, the interval for private owner wagons could well have been similar.
