Tank wagons, like ordinary wagons, were initially only permtted to run in ordinary freight trains, at averega point-to-point speeds of up to 20 mph. In 1913 the RCH created a special category of tank wagons that were built to modern standards, and permitted them to run in faster trains, at up to 35 mph, once they had been "run-in" for 400 miles without problems. These wagons were identified by a 2 ft diameter 6-point star painted on the tank barrel, usually towards the bottom right end. This was accompanied by a star-shaped plate fixed to the solebar, again towards the right-hand end. This plate contained the registration number of the wagon, with an "A" suffix, the railway comanpy responsible for its registration, and the date of acceptance and issue of the star plate.

In 1935 a further speed category was created, for wagons fitted with vacuum brakes, and these were permitted to run in faster fitted freight trains, up to 60 mph. These were initially identified by "F.T." markings, but this was quickly replaced by two painted stars, of 1 ft 6 in. diameter on the tank barrel. This was accompanied by a new rectangular plate on the solebar, with two raised stars and year, company and number of registration.

A third category was also created, for wagons carrying non-flammable loads, that were permitted to run in fitted freight or passenger trains at over 60 mph. These were given 3 stars, with similar markings and plates as the 2-star category.
